The heart is one of the most typical symbols of Abruzzo. Particularly, it was used to decorate many objects which were commonly used by the shepherds at the end of the eighteenth century.

In those times, goldsmiths used to make heart-shaped lockets where the shepherds kept a strand of hair of their beloved ones when they left for the transhumance.

The heart also holds other symbols:

  • the sun, the symbol of male fertility;
  • the moon, the symbol of female fertility;
  • the horn, a lucky symbol;
  • the pattern along the edge represents gemmation, the renewal of life.
